The Reality We Don’t See

Poverty remains one of the deepest and most persistent challenges in Latin America and the United States. Although these realities often fall outside our daily field of vision, the numbers show that millions of people—especially children, young adults, and the elderly—live with hardships that undermine their well-being and their future. For many, access to sufficient food, quality education, or basic medical care is not guaranteed but a constant struggle.

Children are particularly vulnerable: inadequate nutrition affects their development, school absenteeism limits their opportunities, and the lack of safe spaces increases the risks they face. Young people growing up in deprived environments often encounter additional barriers when trying to continue their studies, find employment, or build a stable life project. At the other end of the spectrum, elderly adults living alone or without sufficient income experience neglect, food insecurity, and an inability to access essential services.

These situations create a cumulative effect that spans generations. When a child cannot study, their economic future narrows; when a young person lacks guidance or support, social risks multiply; when an elderly person does not receive the minimum care needed, their isolation and deterioration intensify. Understanding the magnitude and consequences of these issues is essential to recognizing that social initiatives are not optional—they are indispensable.

Fundación San Lucas was created precisely to respond to these needs in a concrete way. This first entry opens the door to a series that will explain how it is possible to transform this reality through specific, responsible, and sustainable actions.
